Sustainability Conference, May 2009

Are lean, energy efficient buildings a profitable solution?

This was the question debated at the 2nd Annual Sustainability Conference held in Winchester's Guildhall. 60 delegates, including representatives from Local Government and Housing Associations, Property Developers, Architects, Engineers and building owners, were brought together by Househam Henderson.

John Mullan the Managing Director of Househam Henderson said:

'We held our first conference two years ago, and since then policy, regulations and the economy have all changed considerably. At a time when clients' budgets are being stretched to the limit and margins within the construction industry are tight, we wanted to look at practical ways of trying to reduce carbon emissions, cut energy bills and help protect the environment.'

A range of speakers including Architects, Engineers and academic experts in the field of low-energy construction came together to inspire and inform participants. Subjects covered ranged from; national policy and targets for Climate Reduction, practical solutions and examples of low-energy building systems from across Europe, and the benefits of monitoring the energy consumption of builsdings in use.

In the last seminar of the day Caroline Martin, a Senior Architect at Househam Henderson, used the case study of a typical 1960's office block, to pose the question; 'What would you do if this was your building?' Following an analysis of the building, she took delegates through a range of measures, with their potential costs and energy savings, getting them to vote for those they felt viable.

With the government looking for carbon emissions reduction of 60% by 2050, the challenge of how we improve existing buildings is rapidly cominf to the fore within the built environment sector. With this in mind, and following on from the success of the Winchester conference, a second conference is being planned in London, looking at that very subject.
